Calling contests have been very good to me and over the years, have helped propel the image of my calls and have put my name in the forefront of the goose call industry. I am very grateful! Back when I was a young kid the calling contests were held in a state park or some other outdoor venue with seven to ten guys trying their luck and the few spectators sat around on picnic tables and lawn chairs. The prize may have been a box of shells, a shotgun, or $25.00, on a good day. Nothing like today’s contests with purses of $1,000 up to $10,000, with as many callers as twenty to forty. As the contests have evolved though, it is a little troubling to me that too much emphasis is placed on the instrument and ‘calling the judges’ rather than concentrating on the true sound of one goose. I would like to see the gentlemen that judge the contests listen for a ‘scratch’ and score it accordingly, listen for that one goose, listen for the greeting, hail, feeding, clucking, comeback - - know and understand the sequence that makes a good routine. I have always said the contest victory depends on what the particular panel of judges are listening for that day. Luck was with me in January 2002 when the judges liked what they heard as I blew a little plastic short reed call named the Poly Carb. How totally surprised I was when they called my name. Who would have thought at the age of 44 I could have captured the one contest that had eluded me for so many years?

Not only have I been blowing and winning during the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, I have had the privilege of teaching many of those that are in business today.

Five different styles of my calls (both flute and short reed) have won world class competitions: the Super Mag, the Half Breed, Honkers Magic Magnet, Hunter G’s 007, the Guides Best flute. In addition, the Poly Carb (an affordable version of the Super Mag) is making a lot of noise of its own. There have been championships won in both Canada and the US. The Guides Best and the Super Mag have won the senior division WORLD in Easton, MD and the HG 007 has won the Junior division in the WORLD.

My reputation is based on many years of development and hard work; my longevity is based on excellent customer service and the loyalty of good friends that have encouraged and supported me through the many years I have been doing this.

I am just one of many men using a GROUNDS call that have taken first place over these 25 or so years, there have been a lot of first place winners blowing a GROUNDS call during that time. I know I have missed some names because more than just a couple of years have went into the making of this list, it is difficult to remember them all. Please contact me if you have won a first place blowing a GROUNDS call and your name is not listed here - - I don't care what year it was, I just want to include everybody that has been a part of this. (And if I am in error with any of these names, please contact me.)

With all the success on stage, just think of the many geese that have been harvested - - - called in with a GROUNDS call. My thanks to all the hunters that "Put 'em on the ground with a GROUNDS call!"

Thanks,
Tim Grounds

Sportsman's Iron Man 2005
Sportsman's Grand Finale 2005
WORLD Goose Calling Champion, 2005, Easton, MD

The names of Tim and Hunter Grounds are synonymous with goose calls, goose calling, and goose hunting. Born Jan. 31, 1958, Tim's first trip to the field was before he ever started school. He carried Hunter, born June 10, 1987 to the blind when Hunter was still in diapers. Both have been passionate, avid hunters ever since. They have traveled to Canada, South America, Mexico, and all across the United States to enjoy hunting, entering contests, and speaking at events. Tim began guiding professionally at the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge as a young teen. He has been a creative force in the goose call industry and a champion caller for four decades beginning in the 1970s. He is a member of the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame, a leader in the field, and is a teacher of the sport he loves so much. Both Tim and Hunter are WORLD champion callers. Tim was retired from the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GOOSE CALLING event in Easton, MD after winning it three times. He has won the Winchester World Open twice, nationals, regionals, and state goose calling contests. Tim owns well over 100 first place titles. In Nov. 2003 16 yr. old Hunter, made history. He became the youngest ever to win the WORLD at Easton, MD. Not only did he win the Senior Division that night, he also won the Junior World Goose, and the Junior Duck. In 2004 Hunter scored the most points of any caller on the contest circuit, earning the Greenhead Gear Cup and $2500. His total contest wins in 2004 earned him $30,000. He has won the Junior World Duck once and won the Intermediate World Duck twice in Stuttgart ARK. Both Tim and Hunter own and operate "Tim Grounds Championship Calls, Inc." and "Tim and Hunter Grounds Goose Club in Southern Illinois. No one can touch Tim's history or the impact he has had on the goose call industry. He has raised the bar to a new level for the betterment of the sport. Tim gives a lot of credit to Abe Lewis, Charley & Keith Hess, Harold Knight and David Hale for his success.

They had fifteen callers scheduled, but a mission came up and a few of the guys had to work instead of 'call', once again, proving they do the most important jobs first.
